The chain stitch is the foundation of crochet projects. It creates a base from which you build your fabric. Chains can be used for creating space between stitches, starting new rows, or as a decorative element in your work.
- Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
- Hold the slip knot securely between your thumb and middle finger.
- Yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front).
- Pull the yarn through the slip knot.
- You’ve created one chain stitch.
- Repeat steps 3-5 for each additional chain stitch.
- Keep the tension consistent as you work.
- Chains can be made as long or as short as required for your pattern.
- To end your chain, simply release the loop from the hook.
- Practice making chains until you’re comfortable with the motion and tension.
