chain - ch

The chain stitch is the foundation of crochet projects. It creates a base from which you build your fabric. Chains can be used for creating space between stitches, starting new rows, or as a decorative element in your work.

  • Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
  • Hold the slip knot securely between your thumb and middle finger.
  • Yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front).
  • Pull the yarn through the slip knot.
  • You’ve created one chain stitch.
  • Repeat steps 3-5 for each additional chain stitch.
  • Keep the tension consistent as you work.
  • Chains can be made as long or as short as required for your pattern.
  • To end your chain, simply release the loop from the hook.
  • Practice making chains until you’re comfortable with the motion and tension.
